Ford F-150 Raptor R 2023 Is Scarily Fast But Surprisingly Friendly

Ford F-150 Raptor R 2023 Is Scarily Fast But Surprisingly Friendly

Ford managed to make a 700-hp supercharged V8-powered F-150 seem confident, comfortable, and in control.

In the automotive sector, these are weird times. After years of waiting and two generations without one, Ford is putting a V8 back in the Raptor to produce the 2023 Ford F-150 Raptor R. At the same time, Ford is developing a totally electric F-150 pickup vehicle. The supercharged, Shelby-powered Raptor R and all-electric F-150 Lighting stand on opposing ends of a same spectrum, and switching between the poles of Ford's (and America's) best-selling vehicle may be disorienting.

You might argue that combustion-powered automobiles have found themselves in the unpleasant situation that the last dinosaurs were in as they watched an asteroid speed across the sky. One of the animals must be a Velociraptor, right? The metaphor doesn't work without it, but bear with me. No, it doesn't. Humor this 700-hp Raptor, because if this is the end of the internal-combustion era, what an end it will be.

Full disclaimer: Ford flew me to Muskegon, Michigan, to test drive the new 2023 F-150 Raptor R, paying for my accommodation in a warm environment indoors in a great hotel. The next day, a few us traveled to Silver Lake State Park, where the supercharged V8 reminded us that there is no substitute for displacement.

2023 Raptor R: Drivetrain and Suspension

When I say, "same old Raptor," I mean a return to form. The original F-150 Raptor, Ford Performance's first broad and scary dinosaur, was powered by a V8. As a result, the Raptor R is all about its powerful engine and associated components. This features a reworked suspension to manage the extra weight and power of the V8 engine.

Ford F-150 Raptor R boasts a 5.2-liter supercharged V8 engine that produces 700 horsepower and 640 pound-feet of torque. That engine is like one seen in another Ford Performance thoroughbred, the Mustang Shelby GT500.

However, strict pollution and other constraints prevented the Raptor R from utilizing the Mustang's maximum 760- horsepower. I hesitate to describe the Raptor R's engine a large, hefty engine since Ford devoted care to packing efficiency: the cast-aluminum-block engine seems nearly tiny, even with the supercharger on top.

Despite its packing prowess, the V8 engine is substantially heavier than the 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 in the standard Raptor.

which makes "just" 450 horsepower and 510 lb-ft of force. The Raptor R's V8 ostensibly weighs 83 pounds more than the Raptor's V6. Passage utilizes a (fairly liberal) resistance to be protected, saying with creation fluctuations, the greater motor can weigh generally between 80 to 100 pounds more than the EcoBoost V6. In this way, while it offers an astounding 250 additional ponies, it adds mass to the Raptor's nose.

The customary Raptor is based on a reinforced rendition of a tow-bundle prepared F-150 edge, with a beefier suspension because of more grounded control arms and directing knuckles, taller swagger pinnacles, and reinforced Panhard poles.
